If GMOs are to be transported outside the EU – for example, to the USA – they must be approved for use in genetic engineering facilities, for release into the environment, or for placing on the market. Exports must not violate applicable local laws. Traders and consumers have access to the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH), an information point for this purpose. There, they can find out which GMOs are approved in which countries and for what purpose. They also receive information on risk assessment and which legal regulations must be observed in the various countries. Furthermore, the BCH provides contact details for the relevant authorities, where they can obtain information on genetic engineering regulations in individual countries.
