From March 2021 - What changes for the S1 laboratory area with the new GenTSV?

Dr. Annabel Höpfner

In the adaptation of the organizational safety measures, the hygiene plan is now also required from S1.

We would like to point out once again: The new GenTSV has been in force since March 2021. What changes have been made to the organizational measures in S1 laboratories? In line with the requirements of the BiostoffV (see section 5.2, TRBA 100), in addition to closed doors during genetic engineering work, the new GenTSV also includes closed windows Furthermore, it is already known that Syringes and cannulas are to be used only when absolutely necessary. However, from now on, it is more precisely specified that pointed and sharp objects are to be disposed of after use in suitable waste containers that are puncture-proof and prevent further risks of injury. While the GenTSV previously only provided for the transport of waste or genetically modified organisms from safety level 2 (S2) in a corresponding transport facility, a marked container is now also required for the transport of S1 organisms and waste outside the genetic engineering facility. Transport container is required which should be tightly closed, shatter-proof and disinfectable. This has long been implemented in many places, but a new requirement in the GenTSV is the provision of a Hygiene plan in S1 systems. This was previously only required by the GenTSV from S2 onwards. In addition, it is now specified that protective measures if there is suspicion that hygiene and protective measures are not sufficient to the desired extent, appropriate Controls for viable organisms must be carried out.

The next newsletter will address personal protective equipment in laboratories.
