A tiresome problem: room numbering in genetic engineering facilities!

Dr. Joachim Kremerskothen

The meaning of spatial information in a genetic engineering facility is not always clear to those responsible.

When notifying or registering new genetic engineering facilities with the licensing authority, the numbering and designation of the future rooms in the facility is specified on the relevant forms (e.g., form AZ-S1, AL, or AT). A room and floor plan is also submitted. It is important that the room numbers on these plans match those on the forms. The actual labeling of the rooms on site must also correspond to the notified numbering. This applies to laboratory areas, but also to corridor areas, airlocks, and functional rooms. Upon completion of the procedure, the licensing authority generally sends out a notice with information on the spatial extent of the genetic engineering facility. The room numbers listed in the notice are binding for further correspondence with the licensing and supervisory authority and are reviewed during audits. When notifying a significant change or when making notifications regarding genetic engineering facilities, the responsible project managers and the operator must ensure that the exact room numbering and designation from the existing official notice is correct. If room numbering in genetic engineering facilities changes (e.g., due to new requirements from the responsible facility management) and is also reflected in the updated floor plans, the operator must notify the relevant authorities . Likewise, the responsible project managers must check whether a change in room numbering requires an update or adjustment of the operating instructions for the genetic engineering facility.
