Classification recommendation of the ZKBS for Staphylococcus pettenkoferi
Steffen Ibrom
The organism evaluated by the ZKBS is the bacterium Staphylococcus pettenkoferi, which was first described in 2002.

S. pettenkoferi is considered to be a trigger for sepsis, osteomyelitis or wound infections, particularly in immunosuppressed patients with pre-existing conditions such as cancer, diabetes, AIDS or tuberculosis, but people without pre-existing conditions can also be infected.
Another key factor in the ZKBS risk assessment was the fact that some strains of Staphylococcus pettenkoferi exhibit multidrug-resistant properties. For example, a strain was detected in a sick cat in India that exhibited resistance to 36 of the 43 antibiotics tested. Sensitivity was only demonstrated to gentamicin, fluoroquinolones, carbapenems, and tetracycline.
The ZKBS therefore classifies Staphylococcus pettenkoferi as a donor and recipient organism for genetic engineering work in risk group 2 and thus follows the classification according to TRBA 466, which also classifies the organism in risk group 2.
