At a web-based conference with renowned speakers and an online vote, the Leopoldina discussed the topic of stem cell research in Germany, the necessary public discourse, and the question of amended legal frameworks, and put them to a vote. Professor Dr. Claus Bartram, one of the discussants, pointed out in this context that the guidelines for stem cell research have been amended since May 2021. He cautioned that a renewed discussion about changing the legal framework for stem cell research should not be based on the state of knowledge from 10 years ago. There have been far-reaching advances in life sciences research that absolutely must be addressed in a debate about legal frameworks if the legal framework is to be truly adapted to the current state of science and research.
