Labelling of food from GMO feed finally regulated

Dr. Petra Kauch

Initial situation: GMOs and food or feed consisting of, containing, or produced from GMOs must be labeled according to EU Regulation (EC) No. 1830/2003. Seeds of GM plants must also be labeled, as must, for example, GM cut flowers or GM ornamental fish when they are placed on the market. Exempt from the labeling requirement are products derived from animals fed genetically modified feed, as well as food containing adventitious or technically unavoidable traces of GMOs or material derived from them up to a maximum of 0.9 percent.
In the coalition agreement, the German government agreed to advocate for the labeling of milk, meat, and egg products if the animals were fed GM plants. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture refrained from this in its 2015 Agricultural Policy Report. It states on page 24, No. 114, that mandatory labeling has been conclusively regulated. An EU regulation requiring labeling of milk and meat products from animals fed genetically modified feed does not currently receive sufficient support from the European Commission and the Member States. This means that, in the opinion of the European Commission, milk and meat products from animals fed GM feed are adequately labeled. A change to the EU Labeling Regulation is not expected.
