Lawsuit before the ECJ against the EU approval of genetically modified soy
Dr. Petra KauchShare
In June 2012, the European Commission approved Monsanto's genetically modified Inacta RR2 PRO soybean for use in animal feed and food. The soybean is said to produce an insecticide and is grown primarily in Brazil and imported into Europe as animal feed and food. An initial complaint to the European Commission was rejected in January 2013. Three plaintiffs have now filed a lawsuit against the approval with the European Court of Justice under EU Regulation 1367/2006. The plaintiffs believe that the variety was not adequately tested for risks to consumers by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In particular, the assessment of Inacta as equivalent to conventionally bred varieties is incorrect. Also objectionable are the lack of investigation into combination effects in the soybean, the inadequate investigation of the risk to allergy sufferers, and the lack of monitoring of possible effects of consuming these beans.
We will report on the outcome of the proceedings.
