On 5 July 2023, the long-awaited draft of theEU NGT RegulationIt is intended to pave the way for the use of New Genomic Techniques (NGT), at least in the area of plants and food and feed, if the results achieved are comparable to those of conventional breeding.
The draft EU NGT Regulation, in its currently available English version, is 64 pages long and contains numerous references, which does not make it easy to read. It has a limited scope and, within this scope, provides for a distinction between NGT plants that meet the criteria of Annex I ( “NGT plants Category I” ) and are thus comparable to conventional varieties. Their comparability is confirmed in a so-called verification procedure in the Member States. NGT plants that do not meet the criteria of Annex I are considered“NGT plants Category II”and must undergo a new, but simplified, approval process.
The AGCT explains the details of the draft EU NGT Regulation in three interview videos with three guests. Feel free to watch and learn more!
