The specific authorization requirements of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 apply to the placing on the market and use of novel foods and food ingredients. As a reminder, this does not concern foods containing GMOs. Novel foods are those that were not used for human consumption to a significant extent in the European Union before May 15, 1997, and that fall into certain categories of novel foods, i.e., "foods that the consumer has not had on their plate before then." Such foods are published in a Union list, specifying the food category, maximum levels, specific labeling rules, and other requirements. The Commission regularly draws up, among other things, a Union list of novel foods that have been approved and notified on the basis of European law. This Union list of authorized novel foods has now been republished. It is valid since February 3, 2022.
