How is the internal transport of biological substances regulated according to the BioStoffV?

Dr. Alexander Heinick

Biological substances must be transported safely within the laboratory to avoid endangering employees. What must be taken into account?

In Section 9 “General protective measures” of the Biological Agents Ordinance, paragraph 4 contains information on internal transport from Biological substances . The Employer has to store biological substances safely, internally secure to transport and take precautions to prevent misuse or abuse. He must ensure that only container be used which 1. with regard to their Texture are suitable for safely enclosing the contents, 2. which are marked are such that the resulting dangers are clearly recognizable in an appropriate manner and 3. the form and Labeling are designed so that the contents cannot be confused with food.

In the technical rules for biological agents (TRBA) such as the TRBA 100 “Protective measures for activities involving biological agents in laboratories” will then from protection level 2 specified which transport container There you will find the protective measures under No. 5.3 in the “Organizational protective measures” in paragraph 19, such as biological agents or material which contains or may contain biological agents outside the protection level area transported internally The transport must take place in closed, dimensionally stable, shatter-proof, liquid-tight containers that can be disinfected from the outside and are permanently labeled. The containers must not be able to be accidentally opened by external influences.

When working with biological substances Risk group 3 (TRBA 100 No. 5.4.2) exposure to biological agents can cause severe infectious diseases in humans. Here, the same requirements for the transport container apply as under protection level 2, but in addition, the Primary containers in a second shatter-proof and lockable Secondary container marked with the “Biohazard Symbol” must be transported.

The internal transport of biological substances of Risk group 4 (TRBA 100 No. 5.5) or material containing them, then corresponds to that of risk group 3 with the addition in paragraph 33 that it must be ensured that when discharging from the protection level area no deportation of biological substances to the outside may take place.

In order to avoid endangering employees through the transport of biological substances, the transport containers used must meet all of the above requirements.
